PRACTICE 01 · BRAND STRATEGY
Brand Strategy & Positioning
Positioning is the most leveraged decision a category leader makes. It sets the territory you own, the buyer you go after, and the operating cadence that compounds over five years. We do positioning as a working system, not a workshop output.
ENGAGEMENT SHAPE
Six-week diagnostic → multi-quarter retainer
Typical first engagement: a six-week diagnostic with a written positioning decision at the end. From there, multi-quarter implementation with the team you met on day one.
WHAT WE DO
The work, in concrete terms.
Category audit and competitive positioning review, with primary buyer interviews
Positioning statement and narrative architecture, with proof points, claims, and proof ladders
Brand architecture for holding-company structures: master brands, house of brands, endorsed brands
Identity system design: wordmark, color, typography, motion, photography direction
Voice and messaging guidelines with usage examples and a content classification system
Internal launch: sales, customer success, recruiting — the people who carry the position
WHY IT MATTERS
The mechanism, not the artifact.
Positioning is a decision, not a deliverable.
The mistake we see most often is a positioning that reads as a brand statement, not as an operating decision. A good positioning tells the sales team who to call, the product team what to build, the recruiting team what kind of person to hire, and the marketing team what to say. We work to that standard.
A position that can be defended for five years.
We test positions against the buyer’s likely counter-narrative and the competitor’s likely response. A position that can be defended for one quarter is not worth the work. We work to five-year defensibility as the baseline.
Proof ladders beat adjectives.
A claim that cannot be supported by an internal data point, a customer reference, or a published study is an adjective, not a position. Our positioning work always builds a proof ladder — the chain of evidence that supports each claim in the statement.
DELIVERABLES
What you receive.
- 01A 25–40 page positioning decision document, signed off by the leadership team
- 02A narrative architecture map (position, narrative pillars, claims, proof, channels)
- 03Brand identity system (or a refresh of the existing one) with usage guidelines
- 04A voice and messaging guide with a content classification system
- 05A sales narrative, including objection-handling, for the top three buyer personas
- 06A 90-day internal launch plan, including sales, customer success, and recruiting
OUTCOMES WE TRACK
How success is measured.
- A positioning decision the leadership team can defend to the board
- A consistent narrative that the sales team can carry into the top three buyer personas
- A measurable lift in sales-cycle close rate within two quarters
- A demonstrable improvement in inbound lead quality (firmographic + intent)
- A reduction in marketing-spend dilution across channels
PRACTICE FAQ
On this practice specifically.
Do you replace our existing agency for strategy work?
Sometimes. We have taken over from strategy shops that produced decks but not operating cadence. We have also worked alongside incumbent agencies, taking the positioning piece and leaving the execution to them. We are not a fit for organizations that want a deck every quarter and no change in operation.
How do you handle founder-CEO positioning?
Founder positioning is a separate track. We work with the founder as the primary archetype for the brand in the first 18–36 months, then transition to a category archetype as the team scales. We will tell you when it is the right time to make that transition.
What is the cost?
It depends on the depth of the diagnostic and the size of the implementation retainer. We do not publish prices because every engagement is scoped to the problem. Diagnostic engagements begin at the level required to do the work well; retainers are quoted after the diagnostic.
NEXT STEP
Bring us the brief.
Six-week diagnostic, NDA from day one, written point of view. We will tell you in the first call whether we are the right firm for the problem.
