Industrial Automation — Relaunch & Reference Cadence.

Industry: Industrial & B2BDuration: 20 monthsEngagement: Brand Relaunch + Reference Cadence + Press Posture

Context.

A 40-year-old industrial automation incumbent — deep installed base, long reference list, slow-moving engineering culture — was losing share to a wave of category entrants with first-time-buyer budgets, faster product cycles, and modern press posture. The incumbent’s product was competitive; the incumbent’s brand was not.

The operating question: relaunch the brand around the installed base, the reference list, and the long-term relationship — and rebuild the press posture to match the category entrants without abandoning the legacy equity.

Work.

We relaunched the brand around the installed base — 40 years of customer relationships, 12,000+ deployed systems, a reference list of 200+ strategic accounts across 18 industries. The brand was rebuilt as a long-term relationship brand, not a product feature brand; the positioning was the relationship, the proof was the installed base, the equity was the reference.

The reference cadence was rebuilt around 24 strategic accounts — the top decile of the installed base by strategic value — with quarterly check-ins, an annual case study, an annual customer advisory board, and a public reference list of 8 accounts that were willing to be named in the press and on the website. The press posture was rebuilt around a 12-month cadence: 4 trade press features, 2 analyst briefings, 1 industry conference keynote, and 1 customer event.

Decisions.

  • The installed base is the proof. In a long-cycle industrial category, the installed base is the proof. 40 years of customer relationships, 12,000+ deployed systems, a 200+ reference list — that is the brand. The relaunch was the installed base, not the new product.
  • The reference cadence is the brand. In industrial and B2B, the reference cadence is the brand. The cadence is the 24 strategic accounts, the cadence is the quarterly check-ins, the cadence is the annual case study. The cadence is the work.
  • The press posture is the analyst posture. In industrial and B2B, the trade press and the analyst firms are the same audience. The work was the joint cadence: trade press features and analyst briefings on the same 12-month schedule, with the same positioning, with the same reference list.

Outcomes.

Over 20 months, the company held its share against a wave of category entrants. The trade press posture moved from defensive to category-authoritative; the analyst posture moved from a footnote to a leader. The reference cadence became a strategic asset — 24 strategic accounts across 18 industries, 8 of them public, all of them producing at a steady cadence. The brand was relaunched around the relationship, not the product.

The client and the specific numbers are confidential. The method and the cadence are the public record.
