Context.
A specialist asset manager — strong investment thesis, weak brand — was operating in a category where the institutional allocator is the buyer, the committee is plural, and the mandate is the work. The firm had a 10-year track record and a defensible thesis, but the brand was a small print signal; the institutional pipeline was a referral pipeline, not a category-position pipeline.
The operating question: rebuild the brand from a small print signal to a category-position signal — and rebuild the institutional cadence to produce mandates at a steady pace.
Work.
We rebuilt the brand around the thesis — articulated as a 32-page investment position document that the leadership team carried into every institutional conversation. The position was the work: a specific view on the asset class, a specific view on the cycle, a specific view on the duration, and a specific view on the risk.
The institutional cadence was rebuilt around a 12-month sequence: 4 institutional conferences (1 per quarter), 8 institutional roadshows (2 per quarter), 24 institutional one-on-ones (2 per month), and a quarterly investor letter that articulated the thesis, the cycle, and the risk. The cadence was the work; the cadence was the brand.
Decisions.
- The thesis is the work. In a specialist asset manager, the thesis is the work. The thesis is the institutional pipeline, the thesis is the recruiting pipeline, the thesis is the regulator’s relationship. We rebuilt the brand around the thesis, not the performance.
- The cadence is the brand. The brand is not the logo, the brand is the cadence. The cadence is the institutional pipeline, the cadence is the conference presence, the cadence is the investor letter. The cadence is the work.
- The CIO is the spokesperson. The CIO is the public face of the firm. The CIO is the spokesperson, the CIO is the underwriter, the CIO is the cadence. We built the cadence around the CIO’s calendar, not the marketing department’s calendar.
Outcomes.
Over 24 months, the institutional pipeline moved from a referral pipeline to a category-position pipeline. The conference presence became a category voice; the institutional roadshows became a steady cadence; the investor letter became the institutional underwriter. The firm was on the short list for 3 of the 5 largest institutional mandates in the asset class over the following 12 months.
The client and the specific numbers are confidential. The method and the cadence are the public record.
